Description

For untold ages, a spirit known as the mountain-monk lived in the Harz mountain range. Often seen as an entity helpful to the many miners and foresters, he would refill the oil lanterns of the desperate, and guide the lost towards their loved ones once again. He would often take the form of a giant, robed in black, and equipped with a long pickaxe.

However, this giant is easy to anger, and many brash and unkind miners have met their end by his hand. During a cold winter morning, a small group of miners set out to work in the nearby coal mine, wishing to provide warmth to their shivering settlement. But deep in the mine, a small argument between two miners escalated, and soon a furious foreman struck the rude and weirdly tall colleague dead. In fact, the colleague was the mountain-monk in disguise, and his wrath quickly descended upon the miners. From each of the workers, the monk took their hearts - those that attempted to flee had their legs shattered from the impact of his long pick. Some however, were taken by the monk deeper into the mountain.

For in the depths of the mine, the mountain monk provides sacrifices to the witches of the Brocken, as the witches knew how to commune with the realm beyond the horizon, bartering with other beings for good fortune to fall on the people of the Harz. One by one, the monk sacrificed the remaining miners at certain ritual sites that the mine connected to. One, given to the witch of the woods: as her deed was to watch the world grow, and for the trees to burn well. The second, the monk gave to the witch under the soil, and she blew onto the stone to turn it to good ore. The third, the monk wished to give to the witch in the water: her doing was to keep the rivers running, and for them to be full of trout. But alas, as fate would have it, the third miner snuck away in the darkness, where he had gotten lost, and starved to death.

For weeks, the villagers waited for the miners to return - shivering and wishing for the miners to return with their coal. On the twentieth day, the village people chose to send a young lad into the mine, to search for the miners. Stricken with grief, the boy wished for nothing more than for his brother to return home - incidentally, the brother being the third sacrifice who vanished. Entering the mine, the young boy will find the lights to have gone out, as the mountain monk continues to search for a third sacrifice to this day.
